LEVELSEVEN

LEVELSEVEN comes from the term used to describe Nina’s hair colour. It is the pigment most adaptable to either light or dark shades of the colour spectrum. Its meaning imbues the music she makes and manifests itself in her songs’ production elements.

For her upcoming project LEVELSEVEN, Nina is the vocalist, songwriter, and producer of an album of intimate and inventive pop music. Her previously released singles I Wove A Garment For You and Your Lust are an extension of this project. Both Nina’s albums have garnered generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council.

I WOVE A GARMENT FOR YOU

I Wove A Garment For You (2020) is LEVELSEVEN’s latest release.

The track is accompanied by playfully edited archival footage from the 1957 film A Dancer’s World, featuring dances conceived by iconic modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham.

“I Wove A Garment For You” was originally written during a trip to England. Platiša was inspired by a visit to the island of Lindisfarne, home to the ruins of a medieval monastery, and was stirred by the idea of monastic living and lifelong devotion; Platiša explains:

“I thought about how the act of creating something for someone is in some small way an act of devotion. For several years I have woven textiles on a wooden loom. Once woven and washed, the threads of fabric unite to become one garment. “I Wove A Garment For You” is the song of a weaver who has woven a garment for someone she loves. The garment is the embodiment of the weaver’s care and commitment. She sings to the wearer: “and if you outgrew, I’d measure, I’d measure”, pledging to adjust the garment as they grow together, never apart.”

YOUR LUST

Your Lust (2019) is the debut single released by Nina under the moniker LEVELSEVEN, a song about falling, overwhelmingly, in love.

The film was co-directed by Nina Platiša & Katarina Šoškić, shot by Šoškić, and by Platiša.

Nina on making the video: “Writing this song brought me back to music after a long time away from it. It is a song about a moment that has changed my life a great deal. One of our key ideas for the film was that it would be about me revealing myself – showing the features, both internal and external, that I hope I will be seen – now, as an artist, as well as then, in the moment that the song describes. There is an enormous amount of vulnerability in that and by making the film with one of my best friends, I felt comfortable enough to generate the sensuality, softness, and tactility demanded by the music.

Using an old digital camera that she loves, Katarina was able to fill the close frames with sculptural shapes to create an intimate, moving portrait that adds another layer to the spirit of the song. I then sought to chase that movement in the edit, creating a kind of dance between the song’s component elements.”
